The German 1918 Offensives

The German 1918 Offensives
At the tactical level of war the Germans are widely regarded as having had the most innovative german rail and proficient army of World War I. Likewise, many historians would agree that the Germans suffered from serious, if not fatal, shortcomings at the strategic level of war. It is at the middle level of warfare, the operational level, that the Germans seem to be the most difficult to evaluate. Although the operational was only fully accepted in the 1980s by many Western militaries as a distinct level of warfare, German military thinking well before the start of World War I clearly recognized the Operativ as a realm of warfighting activity between the tactical german rail and the strategic. But the German concept of the operational art was flawed at best, german rail and actually came closer to tactics on a grand scale. The flaws in their approach to operations cost the Germans dearly in both world wars. Through a thorough review of the surviving original operational plans german rail and orders, this book evaluates the German approach to theoperational art by analyzing the Ludendorff Offensives of 1918. Taken as a whole, the five actually executed german rail and two planned but never executed major attacks produced stunning tactical results, but ultimately left Germany in a far worse strategic position by August 1918. Among the most serious operational errors made by the German planners were their blindness to the power of sequential operations german rail and cumulative effects, german rail and their insistence in mounting force-on-force attacks, instead of attacking key Allied vulnerabilities. The Allies, german rail and especially the British, were exceptionally vulnerable in certain elements of their warfighting system. By attacking those vulnerabilities the Germans might well have achieved far better results than by attacking directly into the Allied strength. Specifically, the British logistics system was extremely fragile, german rail and their rail system had two key choke points, Amiens german rail and Hazebrouck. The Bombardier Story

The Bombardier Story
Bombardier was under attach again. This time, the flack was coming from the president of Berlin-based Adtranz, the rail equipment subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler AG. In 1999, he traveled to Toronto german rail and made a speech in which he warned that Adtranz was coming to challenge Montreal-based Bombardier on its home turf of North America. His motive was retaliation: he did not like Bombardier`s invasion of Adtranz`s European markets. So he was going to put the upstart from the hinterlands in its place. `The major player in the United States of the future will be, I believe, Adtranz,` he predicted. In the spring of 2001, Bombardier acquired Adtranz. The purchase more than doubled annual revenues at Bombardier`s rail equipment division german rail and catapulted Bombardier into the number one spot in the railway equipment industry, ahead of the rail divisions of Franco-British conglomerate Alstom german rail and German industrial giant Siemens. What made Bombardier`s progression in rail equipment all the more remarkable is that it occurred while yet another progression was under way at Bombardier`s aerospace group. In 1986, the company decided to enter the aerospace sector by acquiring business-jet maker Canadair Ltd. of Montreal. This was followed by acquisitions of several other ailing aerospace companies, including world-renowned Learjet. Turning around these floundering assets, Bombardier came out of nowhere to become, in a little more than a dozen years, the third-largest member of the civil aerospace manufacturing industry. Only US giant Boeing german rail and European colossus, the Airbus consortium, are larger. -- from The Bombardier Story Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

In France it took a full decade to begin railway construction on a national scale. Other more comparable nations, such as Belgium, however, embarked on large railway-building projects soon after the technology appeared. Building the main French railway system, however, began after 1842 when a law legalised railways. Circumstances did not favour a start as early and as successful as Britain's, because Britain generally had a higher level of industrialization, and France also suffered the handicap of the history of rail transport in France with short mineral lines. Thus France quickly fell behind Germany, Belgium and Switzerland in terms of trackage per person. French railways started later, and developed more slowly than those in certain other countries While the first railway built in France started operation in 1832, not long after the first line had opened in Britain, French progress failed to keep pace over the next decade.
