On the Rez Well-known humor writer Ian Frazier takes a sobering look at life on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the South Dakota home of the Oglala Sioux. Frazier's abstract admiration for the Sioux world-view is tempered by the realities of reservation life, which include chronic alcoholism, violence, indian rail reservation and poverty, indian rail reservation and which add up to what Frazier can characterize only as manifest evil. In his book, he rails against the injustices to which the Oglala Sioux have been subjected, but he also takes the Indians to task for internal problems. The book is a mix of Frazier's account of his own friendship with some of the Oglala Sioux, a history of the Pine Ridge reservation, indian rail reservation and biography of some of the reservations' notables, including a young basketball star whose on-court victories were overshadowed by her death in one of the reservation's all-too-frequent car accidents.
